A few steps from the historic centre
Matilda Charme is a one-bedroom flat in Trastevere, the name of which derives from the Latin trans Tiberim which means "beyond the Tiber".
The heart of Rome originated along the opposite bank of the river and the Trastevere area was initially inhabited by the less well-off social classes. It is also now considered Rome′s true historic centre while still maintaining the atmosphere of the working-class neighbourhood inhabited by generations of Romans, and this is where its charm lies!
Trastevere, with its narrow traditional streets to wander around and its warm-coloured buildings, is a very nice area to discover. You can find many local restaurants and shops, and by crossing the wonderful bridges over the River Tiber, you can no sooner reach the Campo de Fiori or the Jewish Ghetto area to try the famous, appetising local Roman-Jewish cuisine.
Every Sunday, preferably early in the morning, just a few minutes from Viale Trastevere you can reach the ancient city gate of Porta Portese, the largest street market in Rome, a true Sunday ritual for us Romans and a must-see for visiting tourists, open from 7 am.
